This past weekend marked an exciting start to the season for Rio Rancho Rugby, with action across every age group and plenty to celebrate as we kicked things off around the city.
Youth Rugby: U7 & U12 Off and Running
Our U7 and U12 squads got their first run of the season at St. Pius High School, bringing tons of energy to the pitch. Playing against the ABQ Eagles, the kids were eager, enthusiastic, and clearly thrilled to be back in game mode. Smiles, teamwork, and lots of running defined the day—exactly what opening weekend should look like for our youngest Rebels.
Middle School: A Growing Group with a Bright Future
The Middle School team had a landmark weekend, not just for results but for growth. This group has grown significantly and played their first matches of the season against the ABQ Eagles, followed by another contest against St. Pius. For many of these athletes, it was their very first experience playing rugby. Watching new players learn the game, support each other, and gain confidence was incredibly exciting. This is a group with huge potential, and we can’t wait to see how they develop over the season.
High School Boys: Back to 15s and Making a Statement
For the first time in several years, Rio Rancho High School Boys returned to 15‑a‑side competition, and they did it in style. The Rebels opened against longtime west‑side rivals St. Pius, earning a hard‑fought 24–12 victory.
They followed that performance with a tough match against La Cueva. The Bears tested Rio thoroughly in the first half, keeping the Rebels scoreless. But resilience and discipline paid off—Rio Rancho responded strongly in the second half, pulling away to secure a 24–17 win. A great example of grit, belief, and learning how to finish games together.
High School Girls: First Steps and Lots of Heart
Our Rebels Girls may not have come away with wins in their opening matches, but the weekend was still a huge success. With five of the eight players playing their first rugby match ever, the team showed courage, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. There were plenty of smiles—and a fair amount of soreness—but most importantly, there was growth. This group is just getting started, and they will only get better from here.
We’re incredibly proud of every Rebel who took the field this weekend. Thank you to our families, supporters, and volunteers who make these opportunities possible.
We will get better.
Hope to see you soon, pitch side!
